Service Call: Customer wanted a phone quote to replace a Trane compressor. After giving her the quote, she went on to say that the previous company wanted four hundred dollars more than what I had quoted and she wanted to schedule the replacement immediately.

Air Conditioning Repair: I replaced the compressor and installed a liquid line dryer filter. The old compressors crankcase heater was too big for the new compressor. I informed the customer of this and told them that I would return and replace it with one that would fit properly at no charge.

Service Call: Customer states that the a/c doesn't blow cool air and is need of service.

A/C Repair: This was a Goodman heat pump and the condenser fan motor wasn't spinning. Upon further inspection, it was found that only one wire of the motor was hooked up to a capacitor of the wrong size. Also, one of the wires that was necessary for the operation of the motor was deliberately cut off by someone. The correct size capacitor was installed and re-wiring of the motor. However, the motor still didn't work. The only choice left was to replace the fan motor. After replacement unit operated normally.

Service Call: Customer says that her house is getting warmer by the minute and there's hardly any air coming out of her vents. I asked her if her air filter was clean (because very dirty air filters can cause icing and restrictive air flow). She stated that she changes the air filters every month. She was then informed to turn the system off at the thermostat, and to turn the fan to the on position. This would help to melt any ice that may be present prior to service.

A/C Repair:

Upon arrival, it was noticed that a pool of water had collected at the end of condensate drain line and no water was leaking out. This was a good indication that the indoor coil was in fact iced up, melted, and drained. Pressures indicated that unit was low on freon. Customer opted to add some freon versus doing a leak check and repair. Unit operates normally at this time, but with a minor freon leak.

Service Call: 

Customer states that the air blows from the vents but then stops suddenly even though the outside air conditioner keeps running.

Air Conditioning Repair:  

When you have this type of symptom with your ac unit the most common types of problems that could cause it are:

• Contactor:  If your outside contactor welded itself shut, it would cause the outside unit to keep running even though the thermostat signaled it to turn off.
• Blower Motor/Run Capacitor:  The blower motor or run capacitor that serves that motor may be weak or bad.
• Control Board/Fan Relay:  The fan relay (alone or built into the control board is going bad.
• Loose Connections:  Loose 24 volt connections at thermostat or air handler, or loose 120v/240v connections at motor and power supply.
• Thermostat:  Batteries could be weak in thermostat or the t-stat itself is going bad.

After diagnosing this customers particular problem, I simply tightened the connections at the thermostat and the 24v connections at the air handler and the problem went away.  Everything else in the system checked out fine.  

Although I informed the customer that if the problem persisted, it would mean that the problem is intermittent (something that is difficult to diagnose when the unit is running the way it should) and the next logical approach would be to replace the control board.

Service Call:

Customer says that his air conditioner is blowing room temperature air and that the unit is making a loud noise.

AC Repair Chandler:

This was a split system Goodman air conditioner and the condensing units motor was making a loud noise due to worn out motor bearings.  Some of these generic universal motors can be mounted with it's shaft pointed upwards, downwards, or sideways depending on the design of the air conditioners manufacturer.  These motors have rubber plugs inserted into holes on one or both sides of the motor and if installing the motor regardless of shaft being up or down, the plugs need to be removed at the bottom of motor for drainage purposes (in case water gets into the motors housing), and the plugs need to be inserted into the top of the motor to keep rain out.  This particular motor was installed with the plugs missing from the top portion of the motor which more than likely resulted in a shorter life span for this motor.
