Energy Saving Tip: Home energy audit
A home energy audit is a service where the energy efficiency of a house is evaluated by a person using professional equipment (such as blower doors and infra-red cameras), with the aim to suggest the best ways to improve energy efficiency in heating and cooling the house.
This kind of service can often be performed by:
Public utility companies, or their energy conservation department. Energy services company, insulation contractor, or air sealing specialist. (US) State energy office.

Service Technician Calls
Service Call: Customer states that his ac unit that sits on the ground outside is making a loud humming sound and the fan that sits on top of unit is not spinning. The air inside is working but its not cool.
Gold Canyon Air Conditioning Repair: The compressor run capacitor and the condenser fan motor run capacitor were bad on this York unit. These parts were replaced and the system started up fine. However, after checking the pressures, is was found that unit also had a low refrigerant charge. The air conditioner was charged with approximately (1) pound of R22 refrigerant and system runs excellent.
Service Call: Customer said that she had another a/c company out to fix her a/c and that they charged her over $350 to replace a small piece of thermostat wire out by the condensing unit that sits on the ground. She says that the unit is operating but they quoted her for additional work that needs to be done and she wants a second quote. The parts that this other company recommended replacing were: The condenser fan motor, replacing all of the thermostat wire, and acid washing the condenser coils.
After inspecting her air conditioner, I explained that the condenser fan motor was leaking a very small amount of oil, but this was not a good reason to replace the motor as the bearings and amp draw were still good and the motor could last her for several years. The thermostat wire that was exposed to the elements was already replaced and the rest of the wire (which had no signs of corrosion) was fine. And the coils just needed a 5 minute rinse with a hose (no acid wash needed here). Additionally, I explained to the homeowner that there are many air conditioning companies that pay their technicians commissions for work performed, and that this can cause some dis-honest technicians to recommend replacing parts or cleaning coils (that don't really need it) in order to fatten their wallets. Of coarse, the ac companies that employ a commission structure tactic for their employees are very aware of this dis-honesty, but it fattens their wallets as well. It's corruption from the top down. So the ac company wins, the technician wins, and the customer loses. Moral of the story: Find a company that doesn't pay their technicians commissions, or call A/C Handyman for a second quote and I'll give you an honest assessment.

I saw Bradley's company in a comparison against most all the other Hvac companies in my area... while others sounded good, I was not impressed with what customers wrote about their service and fairness on pricing.... I think Bradley is extremely honest and you really do get pricing that is half of the other HVAC companies... Nice! Bradley is also the owner which I like. Nothing like dealing directly with the person that owns the business that you are buying from!!

I do IT consulting on my own so I thought that there must be smaller companies with hard working honest guys around that do AC work. Google brought up Bradley's web page, and actually read the testimonials and thought I would give him a shot. Bradley came and diagnosed the problem to be a motor, he spent an hour making sure, and returned after obtaining the part and finishing up the other work he had scheduled that day which ended up being 11:00pm to replace it so my family could get some sleep. NO WAY would a large company have come that late, at least not without extreemly heavy fees. Thanks for the fair price and Excellent service!
